ConnectX, BlueField, NVLink, NVSwitch: Buy the Missing Part, Not a Name

A network adapter, a DPU, and a GPU interconnect solve different problems. A low-cost part can become an expensive platform mismatch.

Plain-English rule:Identify the job and both ends of the connection before buying the part in the middle.

One checklist, two buying lanes

Use this hub to separate server networking from GPU interconnects before opening marketplace results. They share a dependency problem: the part is only useful when the host, peer, software, and cabling support it.

NVIDIA's networking overview distinguishes NVLink scale-up connectivity from InfiniBand and Ethernet scale-out networking, and places BlueField DPUs in infrastructure services. Those roles should not collapse into one generic “AI networking” purchase.

ConnectX and BlueField: server networking

ConnectX adapter listings and BlueField DPU listings can look similar in a search result. Verify the exact generation and part number, supported network protocol, port type, PCIe requirements, and intended operating mode. Do not assume an Ethernet requirement is met by an InfiniBand-only part or that a DPU is a drop-in replacement for your current network card.

For BlueField, identify what must run on the DPU and what remains on the host. Ask for documentation of the firmware and software combination. For either family, match the transceiver or cable, port speed, switch configuration, bracket height, and cooling requirements to the exact hardware.

A port count or headline speed is not a complete bill of materials. The card may arrive without the optics, cables, bracket, management accessories, or support entitlement you need.

A compatible NVLink bridge and an NVSwitch platform component are not interchangeable with an Ethernet switch. They belong to GPU connectivity and supported system topologies. NVIDIA's DCGM documentation for NVSwitch and ConnectX treats them as distinct managed entities.

Verify the exact GPU generation, board design, bridge spacing, connector, and supported topology before buying an NVLink accessory. Do not assume a bridge from one GPU family fits another. Check what the application supports; an interconnect does not automatically turn separate GPU memories into one allocation.

For NVSwitch-related listings, determine whether the seller offers a complete supported system, a baseboard or tray, or a replacement component. A loose component is not a ready-made upgrade for an ordinary workstation. Require a compatible platform and its firmware, power, cooling, and service requirements.

The evidence checklist

  1. Exact part number and clear label/connector photos of the offered item.
  2. Written item type: adapter, DPU, bridge, cable, transceiver, board, tray, or complete system.
  3. Documented host and peer compatibility, including generation and mechanical fit.
  4. Required firmware, driver, software, and operating mode.
  5. Included bracket, optics, cables, heatsinks, power pieces, and other dependencies.
  6. Test evidence appropriate to that part, plus seller return terms.

Search only after the connection is defined

The two market-check links deliberately keep networking adapters/DPUs apart from GPU interconnect parts. Results are unverified listings, not current stock held by this site. An appealing price does not prove that the item solves your compatibility problem.

Use the enterprise platform map for system context and the A100 guide for one example of why form factor and platform matter before accessory selection.

Verify the configuration, then check the market.
